By floor area. A 125 g candle suits small rooms up to about 110 sq ft, a 300 g candle about 260 sq ft, and one reed diffuser about 150 sq ft. Larger rooms get more than one. It is a guide, not a promise.
On Android phones with Chrome and AR support, your camera finds the floor. You mark one corner, the end of the wall, then the width. The result is within a few centimetres in good light. It does not work on iPhone yet, so use the typed size or step counter there.
